Work Package 5 – Upgrading of the infrastructure
Data supplied by the infrastructure operator serve to control the traffic signals along the ABSOLUT II test route. AI-based signal programs are to be used to determine optimised switching cycles for all modes of transport in accordance with the current traffic situation. At the same time, the signal programs will take into account the special needs of a highly automated public transport vehicle.
The availability of high-precision and up-to-the-moment data is a prerequisite for the operation of automated vehicles. Means to enrich map data with dynamic traffic and infrastructure information play a special role. On the one hand, information about planned construction work or changes to the traffic rules should be entered into the system via standardised interfaces and become visible in the high-precision maps used by the vehicles and the control systems immediately upon announcement. In this way, it can be guaranteed that the vehicle systems always have access to a valid database for a given moment in time. On the other hand, highly dynamic and certified traffic signal status data, including predictions, can be made available via the V2X systems.
Objectives:
- Development of an overall system, including prototypes of technical solutions, for the complete process chain from the initial announcement of relevant information via changes to the current traffic rules through to technical provision of the data for integration into the vehicle and the control centre responsible for technical supervision.
- Generation of forecast data in the traffic management system of the City of Leipzig and provision of this data via road-side units (RSU). Both centralised and local (SPaT box) approaches are to be considered.
- Integration of a public key infrastructure solution into the traffic computer of the City of Leipzig in order to certify the transmitted V2X messages and to declare them trustworthy.
- Expansion of the V2X functionalities to enable high-quality public transport prioritisation and networking with the central traffic computer.
- Creation and optimisation of traffic signal programs using AI and machine learning.
- Consideration of the special requirements of a highly automated public transport vehicle in the signal programs.
- Definition of the tasks and legal demands to be met by municipal government as the local authority responsible for road construction and road traffic management, and specifically as the operator of traffic spaces for the use of automated vehicles.
