VDV study trip focusing on autonomous driving in the USA

11.04.2024

From April 8 to 11, 2024, the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) organized a study trip to San Francisco and the wider Bay Area, joined by a delegation from Germany to explore the latest developments in autonomous driving within public transport. A big thank you to VDV for giving ABSOLUT the opportunity to take part.

Insights into Waymo’s Operations

A highlight of the trip was the visit to Waymo, one of the leading companies in autonomous mobility. Participants received in-depth insights into the current state of development and the operational processes behind the first fully implemented and approved Level 4 autonomous service operating in mixed urban traffic without a safety driver. The delegation had the chance to experience a test ride through the streets of San Francisco firsthand. The ride clearly demonstrated how advanced the technology has become — autonomous driving without a safety driver is no longer a vision of the future, but a reality on the road today.

Innovative Projects in the Bay Area

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) and the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) also presented their current autonomous public transport projects. These organizations are working with companies such as Beep and May Mobility to further develop these technologies and integrate them into public transit systems.

Opportunities and Challenges

Throughout the study trip, discussions focused on the opportunities and challenges that both the USA and Germany face in introducing highly automated solutions to public transport. Key topics included regulation, infrastructure, safety, and public acceptance. Participants agreed that international exchange and collaboration are essential to drive the technology forward.

A Valuable Exchange

The trip was a great success and provided important inspiration for our work in Germany. In addition to building valuable connections, we gained practical insights for our own projects. The learnings from this journey will now be incorporated into the further development of autonomous driving in German public transport — helping to create innovative and safe mobility solutions.
